Healthy Eating: Tips to Get Back on Track After The Holidays

27 Dec Healthy Eating: Tips to Get Back on Track After The Holidays

You indulged in those creamy, buttery mashed potatoes.

You enjoyed homemade apple pie, topped with melting vanilla ice cream and whipped cream.

You ate one too many holiday cookies….

Those days are over. With the new year coming, you can officially put that behind you and begin focusing on your goals for 2023.

Here are some tips to get your healthy eating back on track after the holidays:

Reset your digestive system. Each morning, have a cup of hot water with lemon. It helps restore your pH levels, jumpstarts your metabolism and speeds up the process of detoxifying your body.

Hydrate. This is one of the simplest solutions out there. Whether you overindulged for dinner, dessert, or drinks, or even all three, water helps recharge your body. It helps restore the energy to your cells, supports digestion and helps cleanse the body from toxins. Use filtered water and add a pinch of Himalayan sea salt to help balance your electrolytes!

Move your body. Take a walk, do some yoga, or engage in any physical activity you enjoy – just move your body. There are benefits to sweating as it helps push the toxins out of your body, leaving you feeling much more refreshed. If you can, try the sauna or steam room at your gym following your workout, and you’ll feel amazing.

Make a plan. Consider what caused you to overdo it the last time. Were you over hungry when you arrived at the gathering? Did you forget to fill your plate with green veggies and healthier options to offset your indulgences? Don’t judge yourself, just use this reflection to arm yourself with knowledge, so you can prevent this from happening the next time. Identify your triggers and have a plan next time so you can avoid feeling guilty and like you’ve failed.

Keep it simple. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be difficult. Make a homemade soup filled with dark, leafy green vegetables, onions, and garlic, or try a green smoothie. The focus at each meal is simple, nutritious, whole foods. Soups are ideal for this because they also can be hearty and soothing, something you tend to feel drawn to during this time of year.

Most of all, treat yourself with grace and remember that it’s the consistency of your daily actions that will result in success.
