01 Jul Tips to Stay Healthy While Traveling This Summer
With summer here, it’s exciting to plan a little getaway or travel somewhere. Traveling is a time to enjoy yourself, take a break from your usual routine, and make lifelong memories. Personally, I am not a fan of throwing caution to the wind while on vacation in terms of your healthy eating and lifestyle habits. Why ruin your months of hard work in one week of vacation?
While it’s great to enjoy yourself on vacation, there are simple things that you can do to stay healthy – and maintain your 80/20 lifestyle. That means, 80% of your actions support your healthy lifestyle and 20% of your actions allow you to indulge and enjoy!
Here are some tips for staying healthy while traveling this summer.
Move your body daily. There are plenty of sights to see and places to explore when you are traveling. Instead of driving or taking a bus, try walking around the city and exploring on foot. If the city is bike-friendly, rent a bicycle to discover new places.
If you’re up for relaxing day, and know you won’t be walking much or moving your body, fit in a workout in the morning. This can be a quick 20-30 minute YouTube HIIT video, yoga routine or body weight strength training, that you can do in your room, without equipment. Working out in the morning is best because you feel more energized to enjoy the rest of your day.
Stock healthy foods. Hotel rooms usually have a mini-fridge where you can stash some fresh fruits, veggies or pre-made salads. If not, bananas, apples, and oranges don’t need refrigeration. Some other food staples are nut butters, dry roasted or raw nuts, protein bars like RX bars, and quick oats. Most hotel rooms come with a coffee maker, so you can easily boil water to make oatmeal with fruit and nuts for breakfast. Try to make at least one of your meals healthy each day. It’s also a good idea to have some healthy snacks with you in your bag.
Stay hydrated. Carry a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go and drink throughout the day. At the very least, order a glass of water with each of your meals. You need to stay hydrated, especially if you are spending all day exploring outside. If you don’t drink enough water, you’ll end up dehydrated, which can lead to headaches, fatigue, and even dizziness— none of which you want on your vacation!
Get enough sleep. Vacations are a time to have fun, which sometimes means you stay up late catching up with friends and family. Unfortunately, lack of sleep can lower your willpower around junk food, decrease your immune system, cause bloating and digestive discomfort, and leave you feeling sluggish and exhausted. If you don’t get enough sleep during the night, vacation is a great time to sneak in a nap during the day.
